Requirements Check Before Applying
Before starting the YPP application, verify these requirements are met in YouTube Studio:
- 1,000+ subscribers (check: Studio → Overview → Subscribers)
- 4,000+ watch hours in the past 12 months (check: Studio → Analytics → Reach → Watch time)
- No active community guideline strikes (check: Studio → Channel → Violations)
- 2-step verification enabled on your Google account (check: myaccount.google.com → Security)
- YPP-eligible country (if unsure, check the YouTube Partner Program page)
Step 1: Apply for YouTube Partner Program
- Open YouTube Studio at studio.youtube.com
- Click Earn in the left sidebar. If you don't see "Earn," click the three-dot More menu or scroll down in the sidebar.
- You'll see your YPP eligibility status. Once all requirements are met, an "Apply Now" button appears.
- Click "Apply Now." Review the YouTube Partner Program terms and policies.
- Click Accept to agree to the terms.
- Your application enters the review queue. YouTube reviews your channel content for policy compliance. This typically takes 1–30 days.
During review, you can continue uploading videos. The review is of your existing channel history, not a pause on activity.
Step 2: Connect Google AdSense
During the YPP application, you'll be prompted to connect an AdSense account:
- If you already have an approved AdSense account, select "Use existing account" and sign in.
- If you don't have AdSense, select "Create new account." This opens AdSense setup. Enter your website URL (you can use your YouTube channel URL: youtube.com/@yourchannel), country, and personal information.
- Submit the AdSense application. Google reviews it within a few days to a week.
- Once AdSense is approved, it links automatically to your YouTube channel.
Important: one AdSense account can be linked to multiple YouTube channels, but each YouTube channel can only link to one AdSense account. If you have multiple channels, link them all to the same AdSense account for consolidated payments.
Step 3: Enable Monetization on Each Video
YPP approval doesn't automatically monetize your existing videos. You must enable monetization video by video (or in bulk):
Individual video method:
- YouTube Studio → Content
- Click the pencil (edit) icon on a video
- Scroll to the Monetization section in the left panel
- Click the monetization toggle to enable it
- Save
Bulk method:
- YouTube Studio → Content
- Select multiple videos using the checkboxes on the left
- Click Edit in the top bar
- Select Monetization → On
- Click Update videos
Step 4: Choose Ad Formats for Maximum Revenue
Different ad formats have different revenue impacts. For maximum earnings, enable all available formats:
| Ad Format | Where to Enable | Revenue Impact | Requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skippable in-stream | Video monetization settings | Medium | No minimum length |
| Non-skippable in-stream | Video monetization settings | High per impression | No minimum length |
| Bumper ads (6-second) | Video monetization settings | Medium | No minimum length |
| Mid-roll ads | Video monetization → Ad breaks | High (multiplies ad slots) | Video must be 8+ minutes |
| Overlay ads | Video monetization settings | Low (additive) | No minimum length |
| Sponsored cards | Video monetization settings | Low (additive) | No minimum length |
Common Issues and How to Fix Them
"Earn" tab not visible in YouTube Studio. You're either not eligible for YPP yet, or your account is set up for a geographic location where YPP isn't available. Check your channel's country setting in Studio → Settings → Channel → Advanced settings.
"You don't meet the requirements" message. Double-check that your watch hours are from public videos only. Private and unlisted videos don't count. Also verify that 4,000 hours were accumulated in the past 12 months (rolling year), not lifetime.
AdSense account rejected. Common rejection reasons: account set up with a non-personal email, incomplete profile, or invalid website URL. Make sure to use a real website or your YouTube channel URL, complete your AdSense profile fully, and wait 24–48 hours after creating a new Google account before applying.
Videos showing "Limited or no ads" after monetization. This yellow dollar icon means YouTube's system flagged the content as not suitable for all advertisers. This doesn't mean zero revenue — it means limited advertiser eligibility. Review the specific content warning in Studio and edit or appeal if you believe it's incorrectly flagged.
