How Much Do YouTubers Make?
YouTube creator earnings vary enormously based on niche, audience geography, and content type. The average YouTuber earns between $1 and $5 per 1,000 views (RPM), but this can range from $0.50 in low-CPM niches to $20+ in high-value categories like personal finance and insurance. Upload frequency and subscriber engagement (view rate) are the two most controllable factors for growing channel revenue.
Most creators in the 100K subscriber range earn between $1,000 and $10,000 per month from ad revenue alone, with significant variation based on niche. Finance creators with 100K subscribers may earn $5,000–$20,000/mo, while gaming creators in the same range might earn $500–$2,000/mo.
YouTube Earnings by Subscriber Count
| Subscriber Count | Low RPM ($1) | Mid RPM ($3) | High RPM ($10) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 subs | $2–$8/mo | $5–$25/mo | $15–$80/mo |
| 10,000 subs | $20–$80/mo | $60–$250/mo | $200–$800/mo |
| 100,000 subs | $200–$800/mo | $600–$2,500/mo | $2,000–$8,000/mo |
| 1,000,000 subs | $2,000–$8,000/mo | $6,000–$25,000/mo | $20,000–$80,000/mo |
Note: Estimates assume 4 videos/month and a 10% view rate. Actual earnings depend heavily on audience engagement and content niche.
Why Subscribers Don't Directly Determine Earnings
Many creators are surprised to learn that subscribers generate zero ad revenue. YouTube ad revenue is driven entirely by ad impressions on your videos — which requires views. Subscribers matter only insofar as they watch your content.
- View rate matters more: A channel with 200K subscribers and 5% view rate earns less than one with 100K subscribers and 15% view rate.
- Upload frequency multiplies earnings: A creator uploading 8 times per month earns roughly 2x what a creator uploading 4 times per month earns, all else equal.
- RPM is niche-dependent: A finance channel with 50K subscribers can out-earn a gaming channel with 500K subscribers if the RPM difference is large enough.
- Audience country matters: A US-centric audience generates 5–15x the CPM of an audience from India or Southeast Asia.
